LEWISBORO, N.Y. Officials for the Katonah-Lewisboro School District say that while power outages still persist in some of its schools, opening day for school is still scheduled as originally planned for Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Hurricane Irene has had a significant impact on our community and schools, said Superintendent Paul Kreutzer. Presently, John Jay High School, John Jay Middle School, Lewisboro Elementary School and Meadow Pond Elementary School are without power and we have not yet been given a date for restoration. On a positive note, Katonah Elementary School, Increase Elementary School and the district offices are operational and are currently being used by district staff to prepare for the opening of school.
However, Kreutzer said that all activities scheduled through Friday have been cancelled, including kindergarten orientation, new student orientation, teacher meetings, meetings with guidance counselors, teacher training and social events.
Coaches will provide information on locations and times of games and practices for all athletic activities.
Kreutzer said students and parents who have not yet received a transportation location slip should use the same bus stop as last year.
The superintendent also notes that all buildings will be closed to the public until Tuesday, Sept. 6. Faculty at Katonah Elementary School, Increase Miller Elementary School and the district office personnel can enter their respective buildings. As a safety measure, faculty at John Jay High School, John Jay Middle School, Lewisboro Elementary School and Meadow Pond Elementary School are not allowed in their buildings until notice is provided.
The Superintendents Conference Day will take place as planned on Tuesday, Sept. 6 with an abbreviated schedule.
We appreciate the efforts of our staff and the understanding of our school community during these difficult circumstances, Kreutzer said. Know that we are making every effort to communicate with you to the best of our ability.
