BEDFORD, N.Y.-- There is one team at Fox Lane High School that is all about having fun.

The Fox Lane dance team begins the fall season with 20 dancers. The team entertains fans at basketball and football games, getting the crowd on their feet and into the action.

Margarette Boccia, an ESL teacher at Fox Lane, has been coaching the dance team for more than 20 years, and said she is excited about all the new dancers. She said Fox Lane was the first school to have  dance team in Westchester and soon other schools followed their lead.

"This is something the girls can do and cherish for years," Boccia said. "When they look back and tell their kids about high school they will remember fondly being on the dance team."

Bocca said girls make lifelong friendships being on the dance team and said many dancers still keep in touch, often sending her text messages.

"We want to take over the stage," co-captain Tessa Plachter said.

Brooke Edgar, the other captain, said the team makes having fun a priority as they learn hip hop and dance moves. They also plan to add more tricks into their dance repertoire.

"We're an army," Edgar said.

The dance team is also active in community, dancing at charity events, including for charities benefiting the hungry and homeless.

"We love dancing for the home crowd," Boccia said. "They come to games and want to see the dance team. It's what they look forward to."

Boccia said the structured environment of the dance team, and having captains who act as leaders, helps prepare dancers for life.

"You become a family," Boccia said. "Everyone is upbeat and enjoying it."

The dance team keeps things drama free, even putting it in writing. Dancers are not allowed to date another dancer's boyfriend.

"We're very open," Plachter said. "If there's any drama, come to us. We just want people to get up and dance."

The dance team has one tryout all year, and it's a big event in the halls of Fox Lane. Not everyone makes the dance team, but the dance team has several dancers who tried out for years and eventually made it.

"We like to show off to the kids in middle school that when you come to Fox Lane, you can try out for the dance team," Edgar said. "We love it. It's an honor to do."
