Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-Westchester) that the district would receive state aid funding to fully restore the position for the district.
The position, which is known as the Student Assistance Counselor, is the district's only counselor dedicated to preventing substance abuse in the community. This position faced the prospect of being eliminated due to budget shortfalls, according to a press release.
The Bedford Central School District serves the towns of Bedford, Mount Kisco and Pound Ridge, as well as, parts of the towns of North Castle and New Castle, all in Buchwald's 93rd Assembly District.
“I am very pleased that we’ve successfully fought to provide this important funding to the Bedford Central School District,” Buchwald said in the release. “Making sure our students are safe is essential to developing an environment where quality education can take place.”
“I commend and applaud Assemblyman Buchwald on obtaining this funding for what is right now one of the single most important positions in any school district nationwide,” said Pound Ridge Police Chief David Ryan. “The recent rise in heroin use was recently identified by the U.S. Attorney's Office as an urgent public health crisis. Only a collaborative effort like this will allow us any level of success.”
