Though among the first to react to the investigation, the Rye Democrat’s bill is not the farthest reaching, according to lohud.com, which reported that Rye city Councilwoman Julie Killian – who is challenging Latimer for his State Senate seat – questioned his decision to introduce the bill so close to Election Day.
“Where the heck has George Latimer been on this,” Killian asked, while pointing out that Bedford has lost out on “potentially millions” of dollars in tax revenue, according to lohud.com.
Latimer’s bill would amend two existing state laws and place a tax on the Bedford land that now houses the two prisons, according to lohud.com, which reported that the town would see millions in added tax revenue as a result.
