Man Charged In August's Bedford Mowers Burglary

BEDFORD, N.Y. - A Stamford, Conn. man was charged in connection with the Aug. 6 burglary at Bedford Mowers which resulted in the theft of eight STIHL power saws valued at $7,000, according to Bedford police.

Kevin C. Childs, 46, was arrested by Greenwich police on a warrant from Bedford police after the department received information that Childs would be in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 29 for a friend’s probation hearing, police said.

"After the court was concluded, they took him into custody and held him as a fugitive," in lieu of $250,000 bond, Bedford Police Sergeant Thomas Diebold said. Bedford police arranged to have Childs picked up on Sept. 6 for an evening appearance in Bedford Town Court.

The Bedford Police Department had been in touch with the Stamford and Greenwich Police Departments, ”because we obviously knew he lived in Connecticut somewhere," Diebold said.

According to police, surveillance cameras at the 385 Adams Street store had captured the Connecticut license plate on the car involved in the Aug. 6 incident: a dark-colored Chevrolet S-10 SUV. The cameras recorded a man kicking in the store's front door about 9:21 p.m. and exiting back through it with the saws, police said.

Childs was charged with third-degree burglary and third–degree grand larceny, both Class D felonies, and third-degree criminal mischief, a Class E felony. He was taken to Westchester County Jail and is scheduled to appear again in Bedford Town Court on Sept. 20.
