Bedford Police Department Warns Residents Of IRS Phone Scam

BEDFORD, N.Y. – The Bedford Police Department is warning residents about an IRS phone call scam and offers tips for anyone who receives a fraudulent call.

The callers are typically aggressive and will demand payment of taxes or will try to trick a victim into providing personal information. They will alter the caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from the IRS and may threaten the victim with arrest if payment is not made.

Bedford police reminds residents of the following tips:

The IRS will not demand immediate payment over the phone of any taxes.
All taxpayers are afforded the opportunity to question and/or appeal any tax bill.
The IRS will not demand a specific payment method, such as prepaid debit cards or wire transfer.
The IRS will not threaten to involve police agencies for collection of unpaid taxes.

If anyone receives one of these scam phone calls, hang up immediately and do not reply to voice mails. Incidents can be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 or online here.
