Unity Made Visible Hopes to Unite Towns on 9/11

BEDFORD, N.Y. — Though it is still two months away, preparations for memorial ceremonies marking the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks are already underway.

Unity Made Visible 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Interfaith Community Concert was discussed at the Bedford Town Board Meeting Tuesday. The organization sent a letter to Supervisor Lee Roberts highlighting the purpose and goals of the event.

“For too long we have witnessed 9/11 being used as a rallying cry for those who preach divisiveness and intolerance,” the letter said.

Unity Made Visible added in the letter that it wants “to take this day back and turn it in to opportunity for unity, compassion, education and understanding.”

The organization bills itself as a Cooperation Circle of the United Religions Initiative located in Northern Westchester. Members of Unity Made Visible said the organization’s mission is to create a community that welcomes people of all faiths and educations, something it would like to see shown in a 9/11 ceremony.

Supervisor Roberts said she added the discussion to the agenda Tuesday for “informational purposes.”

“In the past the fire departments have taken the lead in having these commemorative services for 9/11, but the organizers of this event hope that we can all get together as a community,” she said.   “I don’t know if that’s possible, but I did agree to put it on the agenda to notify the various community organizations as well as the fire departments that this event is being planned. It will be up to them whether they attend or not.”

Unity Made Visible’s concert and event would be held on Sunday, September 11 at Fox Lane High School.

The Mt. Kisco Fire Department will also be holding a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
