Super Bowl a Super Boon To Westchester Businesses

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – With only hours before the Super Bowl kickoff, local Giants fans streamed into Modell's Sporting goods in Cortlandt looking to grab team merchandise.

Unfortunately there was little left to grab.

"All that's left is 4XL," said sales associate Steve Meyer of Yorktown as he helped fans find merchandise. "It's not even a reasonably extra-large."

Meyer said the store had gone through "boxes and boxes" of Giants gear even before the team clinched a Super Bowl rematch with the New England Patriots two weeks ago.

The store was planning to open at midnight to sell championship gear if the Giants won Sunday night.

"It's unreal," Meyer said. "Everything's been selling like crazy. All the Cruz jerseys have been selling huge. Every jersey is gone," he said of Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz.

At Southside Inn in Yorktown head waitress Kim Smith said staff had their hands full with catering orders, especially for chicken wings. The Inn was also running food and drink specials as well as a number of raffles.

"Football is always a big draw here," Smith said.

The Inn had done big business when the Giants won the NFC Championship two weeks ago and staff expected a similar crowd.

"It was packed," Smith said. "You couldn't move in here."

Down the road at Beverage World in Peekskill longtime owner Ted Dick said that having the Giants go deep into the playoffs was definitely helping sales.

"It's been brisk," said Dick as he rung up customers. "It's more than usual, like if it was two other teams. Whenever a New York sports team does well, your sales go up."

Budweiser remained the store's number one seller but microbrews were also selling well, he said.

Dick, a Giants fan himself, said he would be closing at 6 p.m. in order to watch the game with fellow fans at a local bar.

"I'll be there before kickoff," he said.
