CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- New York State Troopers will be instituting a traffic enforcement campaign this week targeting speeding motorists called “Speed Week.”

The campaign, which began Monday and runs through Sunday, coincides with the NASCAR race occurring at Watkins Glen International Raceway Sunday. Speeding by any vehicles will be heavily targeted.

Speed is a contributing factor in about one third of fatal crashes each year, according to Troop K Commander Major Michael Kopy.

“Too often, police officers witness first-hand the tragic and often needless loss of life resulting from highway crashes,” Kopy said. “Many of these highway deaths and injuries result from common but illegal actions such as speeding. We’re encouraging the public to think about their driving behavior and comply with speed limits, to help prevent needless tragedies”

Kopy said every available state trooper will be on patrol during this week, watching for speeders, impaired drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up and other traffic violations.

In addition to the safety benefits, reduced speeds rewards drivers by improving fuel economy. According to fueleconomy.gov, every five miles per hour driven over 60 miles per hour is like paying an additional 30 cents per gallon for gas.

"That can add up to hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year in savings for the average motorist,” Kopy said.

In an effort to keep travelers safe, the state police will assign additional patrols to major highways and step up its speed enforcement activities, Kopy said.

“By driving within posted speed limits drivers can help ensure safe and uneventful travel for themselves and their families,” he said.
