Residents Express Concern on Indian Point

The safety of the Indian Point Power Plant and options for alternative energy sources in Westchester continues to be a topic for discussion and debate in the towns of Northern Westchester.

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef will hold a public forum Thursday on alternative energy sources and energy consumption. And at Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting in Croton-on-Hudson, resident Julie Woodward  asked the board to pass a resolution to help prepare amicus briefs against Entergy, which operates the power plant. Woodward would also like the town to investigate the emergency evacuation plan distributed by Westchester County.

The requests and public forum follow a Nuclear Regulatory Commission meeting last week that reignited debate on Indian Point. Last week’s meeting in Cortlandt Manor had many local residents and anti-nuclear activists angry over what was they said was the NRC’s lack of clarity as Entergy is applying for relicensing of the nuclear plant.

Cortlandt resident Claire Woodley-Aitchison, the rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Mohegan Lake, said she is against Entergy’s plan.

“I’m in the kill zone, I’m against it,” she said. “I think it’s necessary that they state their case.”

The public forum Thursday will be at Croton Harmon High School from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Croton Harmon High School is located at 36 Old Post Rd. S., Croton-on-Hudson.
