Real Estate Attorney Finds New Niche in Katonah

If Ann Luria isn’t closing on transactions as a real estate attorney, you will likely find her hunkering down at the Steger’s Paper Mill in Katonah.

“The last time I took a holiday off was in November,” Luria said as she waited on customers inside the store, which sells everything from cigars and lottery tickets to toys and greeting cards.

The shop, located on 89 Katonah Avenue, has been open since 1979. Although the store was initially located in one building, it has since been split it in half by a wall. Cigars, stationary and newspapers are sold on one side of the wall while toys and other novelties are sold on the other side.

Luria bought the business from the family who originally owned last year and began renovations in March.

She says she always wanted to to be an entrepreneur and she figured Steger’s offered her the perfect opportunity.

“The real estate market was slowing down and I really wanted to own my own business,” Luria explained. “I had worked retail in the past and I really enjoyed it.”

Although the spirit of the store has remained the same, Luria has made some major changes. She says she knocked down the wall that split the store in half, added new carpeting and cleaned the place up. She also added more toys that would appeal to girls in her inventory.

“Everyone has been really pleased and I think we’re going to have success here,” Luria said.
