Murphy, Michaelis, Ciffone Want Legislator Audit

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Two candidates for the Westchester County Board of Legislators and one candidate for Yorktown Town Board are insisting the Westchester County Board of Legislators be audited by the Office of the New York State Comptroller. Terrence Murphy, Peter Michaelis, and Ed Ciffone criticized the county legislature's spending at Yorktown Town Hall Friday, demanding the board's finances be inspected.

“At a time when our economy is pretty much in the tank, and we’re almost on the verge of a double dip recession, our county board of legislatures continues on a track of the gross attitude of entitlement,” said Murphy, candidate for county district 4. “We have our county board of legislators, spending our taxpayers’ money on frivolous perks that they think they’re entitled to during these tough and rough economic times.”

Murphy and Michaelis referenced an article by The Journal News, which cited the board’s spending of over $40,000 on travel, food and cell phone costs in 2010.

“You might not think this $40,000 is much when you have a $1.9 billion Westchester County budget, doesn’t sound like much, maybe a drop in the bucket, but it’s just another reason why we are the highest taxed county in the United States of America, four out of the past five years,” Murphy said. “Folks, let me tell you, our supermajority county legislators need to know that our credit card is maxed out, and it’s time for them to get out,”

Michaelis and Murphy asked residents to sign the petition on www.AuditWestchester.com.

“This is about transparency and accountability,” said Michaelis, candidate for county district 2. “From what we know now, the fox has been ruling the henhouse, The Journal News has uncovered what may be the very tip of the iceberg, we need an independent audit now that will objectively report on how taxpayer money is being sent.”

Michaelis and Murphy stressed that the audit must be independent of politicians, and must be done by the state comptroller’s office.

Ciffone, candidate for Yorktown Town Board, also stood with Michaelis and Murphy to call for the audit.

“There are people who either hide it, or continue to just not find out how the county is spending the money,” Ciffone said. “They need to do an audit, like they did here to ask questions and find out what’s going on.”
