As debate over same-sex marriage rages throughout Westchester, one church in Mt. Kisco stands firm on the belief that all love is equal.
Reverend Dr. Michael Tino of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Westchester hopes the same-sex marriage bill is passed soon.
I am a strong supporter of marriage equality in New York and beyond, Tino said. Its a matter of my religious teachings and what I think is good public policy.
According to the Unitarian Universalist Associations of Congregations website, Unitarian Universalist congregations traditionally promote seven principles, including the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Tino said if New York state allows same-sex marriage licenses many couples would see equality, at least when it comes to the law.
It would mean that the ceremonies I preform for same-sex couples hold the same weight in the eye of the laws as others, he said. To me the love that is celebrated in those ceremonies is the same.
The New York state Assembly approved the same-sex marriage bill Wednesday. The bill now faces a vote in the Senate, where it needs one more senator in favor to pass.
Same-sex marriage licenses are currently issued in New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Washington D.C. If passed, New York would become the sixth state in the country.
