Public libraries around New York, including Mount Kisco Public Library, Bedford Hills Free Library and Bedford Free Library, are set to offer a reading game for children this summer that hopes to bolster education.
The Summer Reading Game rewards children for the number of pages they read.
At the Mount Kisco Public Library, children win prizes for reading a certain number of pages. For reading 300 pages kids can win Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream. If 600 pages are finished this summer Bellizzis Restaurant is offering a special prize and for anyone that reads up to 1,000 pages Applebees will reward them for their hard work.
At the Bedford Free Library children can earn stickers and raffle tickets for every hour read. Those raffle tickets can then be used to bid on particular prizes.
The game is available for both children and teens.
Its really important for education in general, Deirdres Johnson, childrens librarian at Mt Kisco Public Library said. There is proven to be a mark drop-off if they stop reading and a shown increase if they continue.
Children and teens can sign-up online at the Mount Kiscos Public Library website, mountkiscolibrary.org, the Bedford Free Library website, www.bedfordfreelibrary.org, or in-person at the Bedford Hills Free Library. Registration starts on June 1.
The number of pages or hours read can be logged online or on paper at the towns library.
There is also a Teen Reviewers program at the library in Mount Kisco that allows teens to review books that they have read for community service credit.
