MOUNT KISCO, N.Y--Traffic and memories stood still on Saturday morning in Mount Kisco, as much of the village stopped to remember the career and service of Martin Bancroft, a volunteer fireman for 43 years. Bancroft passed away on Tuesday, November 15th, at the age of 60.
The funeral service was held at Oelker-Cox & Sinatra Funeral Home, but the procession is what held the town still. After the services, Bancroft was carried through downtown Mount Kisco, taking a turn onto Green Street where his old station is located, the Union Hook and Ladder Company of Mount Kisco.
Waiting there was a pair of fire trucks, one from the New Fairfield Fire Department and one from Mount Kisco, raising their ladders to give Bancroft one final trip through the type of equipment he knew so well.
Gary Ford, the head fire commissioner of Mount Kisco, knew Bancroft for over 33 years, and recognized he spent much of his time caring and serving the other.
He was a good-hearted person for the whole town, always volunteering, and a fantastic fireman, he said.
Bancroft was a driver for Chappaqua Transportation, who represented themselves with two buses from their fleet. He also was the owner and operator of Mar Graphics. Bancrofts work at the fire department, though, was on display on Saturday, and his generosity could be seen all throughout his services there.
While being here, we kept in touch all the time, said junior fire commissioner Lenny Hyatt. When I first joined the ladder truck company, he took me out and showed me how to drive ladder 43.
Hyatt had known Bancroft for over 25 years, and he knows the world will be without a very special spirit.
He was an all around guy," he said. Well miss him not only as a fireman, but a friend. What a guy.
