Michaelis Defeats Douglas in GOP County Primary

Peter Michaelis soundly defeated Lisa Douglas Tuesday night in the Republican primary race for the District 2 County Board of Legislators’ seat, taking nearly 70 percent of the vote. District 2 includes Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, North Salem, Mount Kisco, Bedford, Katonah and Somers.

According to the County Board of Elections, as of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night, with 69 percent of the districts reporting, Michaelis had garnered 823 votes, while Douglas had tallied 389. Michaelis will now face incumbent Democrat Peter Harckham in the general election this November.

Michaelis had received the Republican endorsement, but Douglas, a former North Salem School Board member and founder of a Tea Party group, the Hudson Valley Patriots, garnered enough petition signatures to force the primary.

Michaelis celebrated the victory with his staff and supporters at Peppino’s restaurant in Katonah where the mood was jubilant.

“Everyone here is very excited about the victory,” he said. “I’m feeling good tonight. It has been a long five months [of campaigning] and the hard work has paid off.”

Michaelis said he was not surprised at the margin of victory because he garnered 70 percent of the vote when he received the GOP nomination at the convention in May. But, he said, his primary victory was not so much about Douglas, but was more a referendum against Harckham.

“This victory is an affirmation of what we’ve been talking about,” he said. “Smaller and smarter government and supporting [County Executive] Rob Astorino. That’s what tonight is symbolic of. We hope that Lisa Douglas and her supporters will join me in that fight.”

Douglas did not return calls by press time.
