Mahopac's Frank Lloyd Wright House Open for Tours

Many people have heard of Pennsylvania's Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous house, but not many know that there is an equally spectacular Wright-designed building right next door on an island in Lake Mahopac.

Wright designed the Mahopac house in 1950 at the age of 83, expecting its success would surpass Fallingwater's. Unfortunately, the owner's funds dried up before Wright's ideas did, and before construction was completed. The building then remained in limbo for years.

In 1991, local resident Joseph Massaro bought the island and its partially finished residence. He spent the following decades in complex efforts to complete the project as he believed Wright would have wanted it.

The Massaro family now lives at "Petra Island" and has agreed to open their home in benefit of the Putnam Arts Council. Joe Massaro himself will conduct two tours of the premises.

The tours are scheduled for Saturday, August 20. The first tour begins at 11 a.m. Tickets, at $65 each, must be purchased in advance. Contact PAC at 845-803-8622 for more information and reservations.
