MT KISCO, N.Y. -- When Nancy Horsey was diagnosed with cancer 16 years ago she didnt have a support group to help her through the difficult times. Now she attends monthly meeting for breast cancer support at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt Kisco as a group facilitator.
I felt like I had something to offer to other women, Horsey said, explaining why she decided to volunteer her time after beating cancer.
Horsey, who lives in Chappaqua, facilitates the Breast Cancer Support Group organized by Support Connection, a nonprofit organization that provides free support services for people with ovarian and breast cancer.
Barbara Cervoni, Director of Services and Communication for Support Connection, thinks that the groups allow women to feel allied.
Its an opportunity to connect with other women who have similar experiences, she said.
While women with breast cancer are sometimes able to talk with family and friends, Cervoni thinks that it is not the same as getting support from someone whos going through the same thing.
Horsey, who said it was difficult not to have a support group around while she was fighting cancer, believes that women who attend this group find comfort talking with other women who have had chemo or gone through treatments.
The Breast Cancer Support Group gives women a safe and confidential setting to express concerns and fears with others going through the same thing.
It gives them comfort to know that they are not alone in this journey, Horsey said.
Support Connections Breast Cancer Support Group at the Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt Kisco meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. All meetings are confidential. To register for a group call, 914-962-6402.
