Kids in Bedford Decorate Bikes for Memorial Day

With Memorial Day weekend fast approaching, people all over Westchester are preparing for the weekend festivities. While mom’s clean up the backyard and dads prepare the grill, kids are left to decorate their bikes. Yes, it may seem like a weird thing for kids to do to prepare for the holiday, but ever since the Bedford Fire Department started inviting kids to bring their decorated bikes into the annual Memorial Day Parade, decorating bikes became a must-do.

In order to give children a fun and safe place to get creative with their two-wheeled transportation, the Bedford Free Library opened up their doors and held the first annual “Bike Decorating Workshop” at 4 p.m. on Wednesday for children ages 4-10.

Children’s Librarian Shodie Alcorn was excited about the turnout of about 10 children, all with bikes in-tow. “It gives kids a place to go and be creative and a setting to actually decorate their bikes,” she said.

Pipe cleaners, colored paper and shiny-ribbon covered the tables on the back patio of the library. The children made streamers from the ribbon to hang from their handlebars and, red, white and blue pinwheels from the paper to attach to their bikes. The kids were also excited to decorate a playing card and stick it in their wheel, creating a noise maker.

Alcorn said Library Director Ann Cloonan came up with the idea to have a workshop for the kids after watching the children in town decorate their bikes for the parade every year. They hope to continue with the event next year.

The Memorial Day Parade is on Monday, May 30 and kids with bikes should line up on Seminary Road at 11 a.m.
