Katonah Shops Bring Sales to Sidewalks

KATONAH, N.Y. --  Looking to find a good sale or a little exercise?

People can find both in Katonah today and Saturday during the hamlet’s Sidewalk Sale. During the event, which is organized by the Katonah Chamber of Commerce, businesses around the hamlet will have tables outside their businesses with items available at reduced prices.

The event will begin at about 9 a.m. Friday and last 5 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s a tradition in town and it always takes place during the last Friday and Saturday in July,” said Jennifer Cook, a member of the chamber’s committee and the owner of the Noka & Noka Joes coffee and gift shop on Katonah Avenue.

Cook said the event is a way to draw foot track through the hamlet’s business district. It is also a way for merchants to sell the rest of their summer merchandise before they move into fall.

Cook said that she will have furniture, novelties and jewelry available for people to pruchase.

“People should come and try and make a day of it,” Cook said. “We’ll have iced coffee, ice cream and lemonade for anyone who wants to take a break from the heat.”

Rhea Russo, owner of Suburban Groove, said she is excited about participating in her first sidewalk sale. The store, which sells everything from clothes and jewelry to furniture and lamps, relocated from Bedford Hills to Katonah last month.

Russo said her shop will have sales on clothing, furniture and jewelery.

“This is my first time and I want the experience to be good,” Russo said.

Eileen McGrath, a licensed real estate broker with Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Katonah, said she looked forward to the event each year. She said her office will have a table with balloons, candy and information.

"We just like to support the community and let people know how wonderful it is,” McGrath said. “The more people who are involved with the event, the more people it will draw to the local businesses.”
