Katonah Museum to Show Outdoor Movies

Katonah Museum of Art will show three movies in their Sculpture Garden this summer that embrace  surrealism.

The “Surrealist Outdoor Cinema” program was created with the museum’s new exhibition Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy, which will go on display June 5. Tanguy and Sage were a married couple who both embraced surrealism in their art.

The films will be shown on July 14, July 21 and July 28. The Sculpture Garden will open at 8:30pm and the screening begin at 9pm. Picnicking will be allowed.

Admission costs $12 for members and $15 for non-members. Complimentary gourmet popcorn will be available.

Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" will kick off the festival on July 14.  This British film made in 1985 is considered a cult favorite and focuses on a man working a boring job as his life jumps between illusion and reality. It is rated R and is about two and a half hours long.

Alfred Hitchcock's thriller "Spellbound" hits the screen on July 21. The 1945 hit flick stars Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck and is set in a Vermont mental hospital.  This psychological thriller even has a dream sequence designed by Salvador Dali, the famed surrealist painter. It runs abound 111 minutes.

"Alice in Wonderland" by Tim Burton ends the series on July 28. This modern-day classic stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Based off the Lewis Carroll novel, Alice in Wonderland is a good option for the kid as it is rated PG.
