Harry Potter Quidditch Match Planned in Bedford

The Harry Potter series may be over, but that doesn’t mean the excitement is.

The Bedford Hills Free Libarary is hosting a fundraising exhibition Quidditch match at the Bedford Hills Elementary School on July 25.

Quidditch, a sport made popular in the Harry Potter series, consists of  two teams comprised of seven members each who square off on broomsticks.

Each team must try to  dodge a ball through large upright hoops of various heights in order to score points. Since flying and magic don’t exist in the real world, the game has been modified and there is even an International Quidditch Association ,which sets official game rules and tournaments that are held throughout the world.

“It’s like a cross between dodgeball, rugby and basketball,” said Kathy Stoufer, of the Bedford Hills Free Library.

Stoufer said the idea came from her 18-year-old son, Daniel, who recently graduated from Fox Lane High School and plans to attend Wesleyan University in Connecticut this fall. She said her family are huge fans of the Harry Potter books and that love is what motivated her son to play.

“He got a couple of friends together and they agreed to have an exhibition match,” she said. “It’s a fun way to raise funds for the library. With the library budget cuts, we need anything we can get.”

In addition to the exhibition match, there will be a bake sale and a donation table to help raise money for the library.

The International Quidditch Association, which has a satellite office in Bedford Hills, is also donating brooms and other equipment to be used in the match.

Daniel Stoufer said he is excited to get a chance to play the game he loves. It’s the first time he and many of his friends have played the game.

“There’s a certain silliness that makes it interesting,” he said. “We just want to make sure that everyone here know the rules. We just want to play the game and raise money for the library.”

The game begins at 4 p.m. on the elementary school field. For more information call the Bedford HIlls Free Library at 914-666-6472 for more information.
