Harckham Proposes New Public Safety Measures

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Westchester County Legislator Peter Harckham (D-Katonah) has introduced three bills regarding the need to back up emergency electric power, maintain communications in crises and equip crisis management personnel with additional training.

The first specifies that the county take stock of its supply of emergency generators and acquire additional generators as needed, in order to equip municipalities who require assistance when emergencies occur.

The second calls for all cellular and communications towers in Westchester to have backup generators with a minimum of 72 hours of fuel.

The third would require the county to provide additional training for EMS workers, as it does for police officers and firefighters.

Harckham’s proposals are the outgrowth of several emergencies that arose last year during storms. “We know what needs to be done,” he said, “and shouldn’t wait to put further protections in place for our residents and business owners.”
