Economy Hasn't Stopped New Business in Bedford

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Several local businesses that opened shop during the recent rocky economic climate have boasted that the risk was worth the reward – especially since local business owners feel passionate about their trade.

A number of small stores and companies in Mt. Kisco and Bedford have seen great success since recently opening, including Meme’s Treats, Secret Society, Fannie’s Goodie Shop, Skinny Buddha and Abyss Scuba.

“I’m not going to tell you it’s not scary -- it is,” said Dawn White, owner of Meme’s Treats. “I’m so passionate about it though, I’m just not going to give up.

White was in the graphic design business for 20 years before making the change to baker and opening Meme’s Treats in Mt. Kisco in 2011. White credits her success to word-of-mouth and using her graphic design skills to create professional looking logos and packaging.

Another new shop that opened just around the corner from Meme’s Treats is Secret Society. The store relocated from New York City.

“We figured a lot of people who shop in the (New York) City are actually from Westchester,” one of the three owners of the sneaker boutique, Luis Mendoza said.

Mendoza said he feels doing something he loves is worth the risk, like owning his small business in a rough economy.

“We’ve been collecting (sneakers) since we were little kids,” he said. “It’s a passion for us. It’s a form of expression and fashion.”

Secret Society says that they owe a lot of their success to Frannie’s Goodie Shop. The self-serve frozen yogurt shop opened earlier this summer and draws huge crowds. Frannie Albanese, owner of the shop said, “The store has been picking up in the day because of the heat.”

Frannie’s Goodie Shop is on East Main Street.
