Dine Out for Education June 2 in Peekskill

Eating out in Peekskill on Thursday, June 2 won't just help city restaurant owners. It will also help city students.

Seventeen area eateries will be donating 10 percent of all profits to the Peekskill City Schools as part of the Dine Out for Education fundraiser, sponsored by the Peekskill Education Foundation (PEF). Peekskill Education Foundation President Jeff Stern said the first event two years ago helped raise several thousand dollars for the schools. After cancelling the event last year due to the struggling economy, the foundation hopes the second Dine Out for Education event will also be a success.

"The idea was to of course raise money for the schools but we also saw it as a way to give back by encouraging people to eat out at Peekskill establishments," Stern said.

Among the businesses taking part in the fundraiser are 12 Grapes, Division Street Grill, the Cortlandt Colonial Restaurant, The Peekskill Coffee House and Ruben's Mexican Café.

Profits from the event will go towards science and technology equipment, classroom libraries, class projects and music equipment for the district. Stern said the feedback from restaurant owners has been very positive.

"Some of them said next year we should do it for a whole week," Stern said.
