Center, Garden Club Help Bring the Holiday Spirit

KATONAH, N.Y. —Food is one of the basic necessities for any family and for many around the area that are in need, the Community Center of Northern Westchester is the supplier. The Center and the Rusticus Garden Club are making sure that some families will be able to add a little extra to their holiday spirit.

Volunteers of Rusticus traveled to the center on Tuesday to bring more than 50 wreaths, marking the second time in as many years the club has done so.

“We’re all in it together. It’s our way of giving and helping, one of the many ways we do. It’s an important way of contributing,” says volunteer Jani Brown. “As human beings, we live and breathe like a plant and this is a way to give back with both in mind.”

Rusticus has been of service to other spots around the area, most notably the John Jay Homestead garden and the Bedford Village garden. But the wreaths spurred a day of their own, as the volunteers set aside a wreath-making day and sent them to the center. The club also received monetary donations to buy pre-made wreaths, which were added to the total.

“They’re part of holiday cheer and sharing. They represent the community, sharing the holidays and season,” said Sherry Wolf, the executive director of the center. “They’re a universal symbol of the December holidays, giving, and the spirit of cooperation.”

Brown notes that, while this may only be the second year the club has offered the wreaths, she sees the program extending to become a valued tradition for the club.

“My hope is that we get more and more wreaths each year,” she said.
