Bedford Riding Lanes to Hold Inaugural Tag Sale

BEDFORD, N.Y. — The Bedford Riding Lanes Association will be holding its first ever tag sale on Saturday, attempting to raise money to help maintain the different trails owned and looked after by the association. The organization, which is a nonprofit, controls and maintains more than 100 linear miles of trail for the Bedford and Pound Ridge communities, and it brings people from around the county into Bedford to ride.

Nancy Nygreen lives in White Plains and works two jobs, but one of her favorite times of the week is when she can get on her horse that is kept in Bedford and relax. Nygreen, a member of the association, had the idea for the tag sale. The funds raised in the sale will be going to maintaining the trails, she said, which took a beating like the rest of the community thanks to the October snowstorm.

“We still have huge trees down,” Nygreen said. “You need equipment like chainsaws, and not to mention the conservation effort. You can have two or three trees down in the middle of trail, and you’re just stuck. You often can’t get around them.”

The sale will bring the community members to the front and back of the table, as members will be the sellers as well as the buyers.

“Most people who have a horse end up having all kinds of extra stuff, extra blankets, extra bits, extra this and that, so we thought we’d have a tag sale,” Nygreen said. “But it’s kind of morphed into a type of flea market, because people from some barns will bring used equipment, two antique dealers who deal with equine things, so it’s a little broader than used riding things, but it really is for the riding community.”

Nygreen hopes this event will spur others, as she believes this could be the first of many in the future for the lanes. “What we’re like to do over the years is bring in demonstrations for people so it can be an educational event. Like putting on a saddle, fix a horse’s behavioral problem. For backyard barn owners, it’s good to keep up on aspects of horse care.”

The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 at 129 Katonah's Wood Road in Katonah. For more information about the event visit the Bedford Riding Lanes website.
