Bedford Resident Awakens to Stranger on Couch

BEDFORD, N.Y. — Bedford Police arrested and charged a 22-year-old man who woke up on the wrong couch at the wrong time last week.

On Feb. 28, a resident of Brook Farm Road in Bedford walked down the stairs in the early morning to find a stranger on the living room couch, according to Lt. Jeffrey Dickan of the Bedford Police Department.

At 6:52 a.m., police were called to Brook Farm Road when the resident discovered the individual sleeping on his couch. When police officers responded, the man appeared to be “intoxicated enough to make him not know where he was,” Dickan said. The man had no reason to be there, the police lieutenant said, and entered the home through an unlocked door downstairs. He was charged with trespassing in the third degree, a class B misdemeanor, and was released on $250 dollars bail.

“The moral of the story is, lock your doors at night. He didn’t break into the house, he found a door open and walked in and thought he was where he was supposed to be,” Dickan said. “If they locked their doors, he wouldn’t have come in.”

The following incidents were also reported in the Bedford Police blotter:

-Two unnamed teens who were yelling and screaming on Bedford Road in Katonah were arrested and charged with resisting arrest on Feb. 29 after the two, who were ex-boyfriend and girlfriend, got into a physical altercation with the inquiring officers, Dickan said. The male was subdued first by police and did not comply and, after fighting with the officer, was tasered. During the altercation, the female attempted to stop the officers from subduing her ex-boyfriend and in return was arrested also, Dickan said. Both individuals were charged with one count of resisting arrest, and two separate counts of disorderly conduct.

-John Martin, 67, of White Plains was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, on Feb. 29 after crashing his car on a curve of Bedford Road in Katonah, police said. According to police officers at the scene, a wine bottle was found in Martin’s car and he reportedly had blood shot eyes, as well as the smell of alcohol.  Police reports said he took part in a handful of field sobriety tests, some of which he failed and others he refused. Once officers determined he had been driving while intoxicated, police said, he was arrested by Bedford Police and released on $250 bail. His return to court is March 15.
