Bedford Makes Last-Minute Dash to File Taxes

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The Bedford Post Office was abuzz on Monday with residents popping in and out to drop off their tax forms, in hopes of avoiding late penalties. Federal and state income taxes are due Tuesday, April 17 by the last mail pick-up time.

“Last week, we did have more people coming in,” said a USPS worker, noting that the office has gotten busier lately.

Filing by snail mail is still popular, but according to the IRS website, electronic filing has become the most popular method to file taxes. H&R Block District Manager Phil Amundsen, who works out of White Plains, said that e-filing is easier, since you can file your federal and state taxes simultaneously.

Terry Long of Bedford was at the post office filing her daughter's taxes as well as an extension form. "I'm just glad to get it in there," Long said.

Amundsen said that some people take a longer time to do their taxes since they want to make sure they have identified every last tax credit they are entitled to. And then there are super meticulous people who want to double check every last detail, he said.
