BEDFORD, N.Y.--When a dozen kids took to the streets of Bedford in an attempt to raise money for the Bedford Hills Free Library, the staff there thought it was a sweet gesture that would raise a couple hundred dollars. Six hours later, the librarians were blown away when the group presented them with $2,058.
Its a bit remarkable, said Rhoda M. Gushue, director at the Bedford Hills Free Library. They really went out and had a good time. They made a good effort for us and its nice to see teens involved in the community.
High School student Teo Viola was the leader behind the fundraising effort, recruiting his friends and classmates to help. The library is currently facing a 10 percent funding cut. It will need to raise funds to supplement the loss to maintain their current programs.
Saving the library was their goal, Gushue said, adding every bit helps.
The Bedford Hills Free Library has reached out to the community to help as well.
We get a positive reaction, Gushue said of the places and organization the library has contacted to help raise funds.
The Katonah Play School had a continued effort to generate money throughout the year and recently handed over a check of more than $3,000. The Lions Club held a pancake breakfast to raise money and is planning another one for the fall. Major businesses in town also gave back. Panera Bread had a day where a portion of the profits earned went towards the library.
