Bedford Did You Know...?

BEDFORD--Bedford, did you know that the Sutton Clock Tower was built to please a woman?

According to the Bedford Historical Society, Mr. Sutton built a huge clock in the family barn during the 1880s to make his wife, who was missing the church bells of New York City after moving to Bedford, happy.  The clock was an E. Howard time and strike model. The Historical Society's website says the bell of the clock is 550 pounds.

The barn burned down but the clock was saved and a tower was built around it in 1939 by neighbors. It was donated to the Town of Bedford, which has maintained the clock since 1985. It still runs accurately.

The Sutton Clock Tower can be found at the corner of Guard Hill and Succabone roads.
