Pound Ridge Lures: Local Butter, Miso Soup

Locally made butter attracts fresh food fanatics. Miso soup and bean thread saifun (a type of noodle) satisfy shoppers with a taste for Asian staples. Add loyal workers like Connor Packer, 18, and you start to see the ingredients that are core to the success of Scotts Corner Market, a family-owned store in Pound Ridge.

Jason Fortin, 28, the store manager, emphasizes that a unique selection and the Fortin family's ties to the community help sustain the store despite big name supermarkets just a short drive away.

"We're independent so we carry whatever products we want," Fortin said.

Fortin has worked at the market since he was 14 and notes that the store moved locations and went through a remodeling. The basic atmosphere and elements that make it unique have remained the same, he said. One such element is the importance of fresh supplies. "Our seafood department is phenomenal," Fortin said. "We get stuff from the fish market in the city daily except Sunday."

Packer has worked for Scotts Corner Market for five years and has noticed some changes during his time there. A lot of people his age no longer shop at Scotts simply because they have gone off to college at places too far away to go to Scotts regularly.

This Western Connecticut State University student wrapping up his first year as a creative writing major is an exception and comes back to work weekends. There may not be a Scott at Scotts Corner Market, but the Fortins have built a loyal following.

"People come in and know the owners," Packer said. "People come in and know people here."
