Katonah's Charlotte De Laura Dies at 100

KATONAH, N.Y. – Charlotte C. De Laura died at her home in Katonah on Jan. 7. She was 100. 

She was born Aug. 1, 1911 in Yonkers, where she was raised. In 1932, De Laura graduated from Cochran School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She taught and practiced at various hospitals including St. John's Riverside, Creedmore, Northern Westchester Hospital. She eventually retired from the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility at the age of 73.

In May 1940, she married R. D. De Laura and lived in Mt. Kisco and Katonah with her family. Nickname "Mrs. Nurse," De Laura was said to devote time and nursing expertise to fellow community members.

Some of her hobbies include crafting jewelry and rosaries, photography and gardening. De Laura also enjoyed traveling abroad and participating in Elder-Hostel programs throughout the U.S.

She is survived by her daughters Yvonne Harper, Suzanne Carpentier, Mary De Laura and Elizabeth De Laura. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and her sister Alice Williams. She was predeceased by her husband and her son Joseph De Laura.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Oelker-Cox & Sinatra Funeral Home in Mt. Kisco. The funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mt. Kisco, followed by interment in St. Francis Cemetery.
