I'm A NYC Marathon Runner: Frank Curtis, North Salem

NEW YORK, NY - On Sunday, over 40,000 people from across the globe will be taking part in the New York City Marathon. We'll be profiling several Westchester runners in the days leading up to the big race.

Among those is Frank Curtis of New York City. Curtis, 30, grew up in North Salem and graduated from North Salem High School in 1999.

"It's my third marathon," Curtis said. "I've run Chicago and NYC before. My girlfriend Beth Hochman is also running and it is also her third. We wanted to do one last marathon since we both recently turned 30 and wanted to do one post-30 marathon.

Curtis said he started running to get exercise during graduate school.

"They had a great lake front and it was the best way to take advantage of it, Curtis said. "Also, I knew a few people who did marathons and wanted to see if I could do it, because I was never a runner previously."

Curtis and his girlfriend are both running for Team Continuum, a charity that helps cancer patients and their families minimize the disruptions, hardships and uncertainties of everyday life so that they can focus on crucial medical care. They provide assistance such as paying household expenses, offering friendship and moral support, and funding health care facilities to enhance the delivery of care, communications and educational services.

When asked about advice for people running NYC for the first time he said the bridges are tougher than they look.

"Don't underestimate the bridges!," Curtis said. "They involve some long inclines.  Also, be prepared for the wait in Staten Island before the start of the race.  It's important to stay warm and loose, especially since you have to get there early and the wait can be long."
