TARRYTOWN, N.YThrough dinner and dancing, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, the Harvey School brought together its past, present and future in celebration of its headmaster, Barry Fenstermacher, who is currently in his 25th year at the helm of the private school in Katonah.
At the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in Tarrytown, Fenstermacher was recognized for his work building up the schools services, reputation, and future, which have clearly gone quite noticed over the last quarter century.
After the first few years, he had a very long term vision for the school, and he was determined to make that happen, said Eileen Walker, chair of the Harvey Schools Board of Trustees. The physical changes of the school, the new middle school, the art center, and the new gym; he took on the new challenges.
The headmaster not only captivated those with the improvements to the school, but also his own personal charm and character.
He has a great sense of humor, very loyal. Hes a great storyteller. He can deliver a story and speech like anything else, said Laura Pritchard, director of development at the school. Ive never worked with any other headmaster who is as good on his feet.
Working on his toes has its benefits, but as communications director of the school Chris Del Campo explained, his long-term planning has set him apart from the rest.
Hes a man of vision. Hes been someone with an eye toward the future, always looking how we can do things better, Del Campo said. Hes very supportive of his staff. If you have an idea, he'll hear it, and say go for it.
But it is that quality, the willingness to trust others and surround oneself with success that Fenstermacher believes is what has been so beneficial.
If someone lasts this long, he explained, theyve had the support of a board of trustees, an amazing group of faculty and staff, and parents and kids who have all come together to make the school what it is.
