The organization said it had a “banner year” in 2012, with an increase in total visitors, membership, completion of vital land acquisitions, and enhanced science and education programs.
Following that success, the Gorge plans to expand its mission, its outreach and its programs to point the way forward for the next 60 year.
“We’ve reached a turning point in the history of the Mianus River Gorge,” said Tim Evnin, chairperson of the Board of Trustees.
“Our financial footing is sounder than ever, we have a highly capable staff in place, and we are beginning to articulate a broader vision of how we can help protect our natural environment in New York City’s backyard. There’s never been a more exciting time to be part of this organization, especially given its extraordinary heritage.”
Mianus River Gorge, located at 167 Mianus River Road in Bedford, added nearly 40 acres of land to the preserve in 2012.
Gorge Trustees and Executive Director Rod Christie also spearheaded an effort to complete a two-decade struggle to protect the upland forests of the Twin Lakes area in Bedford. Plans are being drawn for opening up public access to Twin Lakes through a new loop trail.
As the Mianus River Gorge celebrates its 60th anniversary on Monday by opening its trails, per tradition, to the public following a four-month winter rest, it will also continue the celebration later this month.
On April 20, Gorge staff will host “A Walk on the Wild(flower) side” in partnership with local environmental groups, including Westchester Land Trust, Bedford Audubon Society, and Pound Ridge Land Conservancy. Visitors will have the opportunity to inspect the Gorge’s deer exclosures and learn about ongoing wildflower restoration efforts.
“It’s our way of welcoming the public back and giving them the opportunity to meet our staff and Trustees. It will be a fun event,” said Christie.
Evnin echoed Christie’s welcoming.
“We welcome residents of the tri-state region to come and enjoy the natural beauty of our Preserve,” said Evnin. “And we ask them to join us as we look to protect and expand the Mianus River Gorge’s priceless natural heritage for the next 60 years and beyond.”
