Bedford Hills Neighbors Give to Seniors on Valentine's Day

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. — The Bedford Hills Neighborhood Association was seen throughout Bedford Hills on Valentine’s Day in the form of a very sweet treat. For the first time, the organization embarked on a Sweets for Seniors program, giving seniors in the Bedford Hills community a small bag of treats, letting them know they are in the thoughts of those around them.

The program was installed after the association’s president, Janet Jacobsen, saw it being done in other neighborhoods around the county. After getting help from the Bedford Hills Lions Club and the Bedford Hills Free Library, the snacks were ready to be packaged and given away on Tuesday.

“We had heard about other communities doing it, and we thought it was a great idea that needed a little community man power, but it was a small project that everyone can be a part of,” she said. “The cost is small, but the impact could be great.”

Jacobsen said the day was already deemed a success by the time they reached Fellowship Hall in the afternoon, where the response was welcoming. “They couldn’t have been any happier. They were thrilled. It was an unexpected little treat. It’s been a nice, feel good day,” Jacobsen continued. “We’re giving, but we’re getting so much in return getting to see the appreciation in all of their faces.”

Sallie Sills of Bedford Hills and her daughters, Jane and Cleo, were on hand for the day at Fellowship Hall.  Sills said she wanted to show the girls that it’s important to give on such a holiday.

“I’m bringing my girls because I feel like Valentine’s Day is not just about receiving. They got lots of stuff at school,” Sills said. “I wanted to show that it’s about giving and love, and one way to show love is by giving things to people who otherwise might not get anything on Valentine’s Day.”

Sills said her actions, and those of the neighborhood association in general, can be good lessons for her children to grow from. “I really think that the best way to parent is by being the person you want them to be,” she said. “So they asked why are we doing it and I said, ‘Because it’s a kind thing to do.’ It’s practicing kindness.”
