Lifts carried skiers and snowboarders to the top of mountain and they glided down the slopes beginning at 9 a.m. The mountain will remain open until 10 p.m., and will be open all weekend.
“We’re so glad we’re finally up and running,’’ said General Manager Bob Switzgable, who has been working and skiing at the mountain for 30 years. “This is the latest date we’ve ever opened, but we’re looking forward to a good long run for the rest of the winter.”
Ski Sundown opened 10 trails and all of its lifts were operating on Friday morning. The scheduled snowsport school classes were also being taught as planned.
With its assortment of snowmaking equipment, Ski Sundown is typically the first ski area in New England to be 100 percent open. Besides its snowmaking, Ski Sundown also distinguishes itself from other ski areas in the region with its variety of terrain and amenities. The mountain offers equipment for rent, a food and lounge area, lodge mezzanine with mountain views, a ski shop, and welcome center.
Ski Sundown also offers free NASTAR and league racing, ski and snowboard lessons for all abilities, programs for kids and teens, junior instructor development and a women’s club. It is located about 90 minutes lower Westchester County and about two hours from New York City.
“We encourage all skiers and snowboarders to make up for lost time, gear up and hit the slopes,’’ Switzgable said. “We plan on being open for the rest of the winter and into early April. It’s finally time to ride.”
