Katonah's Martha Stewart Explains Why She Pilots Her Own Drone

BEDFORD, N.Y. – It’s no secret that Bedfordite Martha Stewart loves gadgets, but the latest buzz about the entrepreneur, author and TV personality has nothing to do with kitchen or gardening utensils.

That low, continuous humming sound may be coming from a drone high above her 150-acre farm in the hamlet of Katonah, says a recent report in The Wall Street Journal.

The 75-year-old homemaking queen told WSJ writer Chris Kornelis that she likes to use the flying cameras when she’s working on a building project because it’s “nice” to see from above and “handy” for lining things up sans surveyor.

She told that one of her farm workers uses a drone to capture the awesome photos of her fields, horse paddocks, chicken coops and barns that she posts on her blog.

Stewart's drone use may have sparked a humorous essay or two in The New Yorker, but she is serious about using them.

Drones are simply “useful tools,” she said, asking readers to imagine what French monarch Louis XIV, aka the Sun King, could have done at Versailles if he had one.

(As if the 721,206-square-foot palace, massive grounds and 230 acres of gardens weren't lavish enough.)

But the New Jersey native may need a few more flying lessons, the WSJ interview said. She lost her last one – a DJI Phantom 2 Vision – when it smashed into a tree on a neighboring property.
