SOMERS, N.Y. - Lunch at Lasdon last week featured a three-man jazz combo known as The ABCs of Jazz, with Arthur Hightower on drums, Bill Conway on bass, and Carl Viggiani on piano. Individually, these musicians have played with Chuck Mangione, Doc Severinsen, Sylvia Sims and Margaret Whiting, so you can imagine that the music they produced, together with the lovely weather, made for a glorious afternoon.
Karen Sabath and Amy Day took the day off from work to go. We take advantage of everything thats in our backyard, said Day. They started the day with a hike at Yorktowns Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve, picked up lunch at Turcos and settled in at Lasdon to enjoy the music and the meal. It was a Route 35 affair, said Sabath. She had just bought a collapsible table in a bag from Amazon and I was dying to try it out. Everybody is asking where I got it.
Stuart and Marilyn Faust came over from Ossining. They had unwittingly come the previous week, when the concert was canceled due to threatening weather. They stayed and picnicked anyway and it never did rain. This week they enjoyed their picnic, the weather and the music. Ive been living here for 16 years and Im embarrassed to say we only just discovered this park. Its a hidden gem, said Stuart Faust. He mentioned it to a friend in Briarcliff Manor who said, Never heard of it. Where is it?
There will be two more Jazz Lunches at Lasdon, weather permitting. On Friday, July 22, the Kevin Callaghan Group will perform. On Friday the 29, it will be the Gerard Carelli Orchestra.
Admission is $5 per person. For information, call (914) 864-7268.
