Dehydrated Family Stranded On Cliffs Above Hudson Uses Cellphones To Send Distress Signal
Responders rescued a family of lost, dehydrated hikers stranded in the dark 350 feet above the Hudson River. It was the fourth rescue in just two weeks from cliffs along the Palisades between the George Washington Bridge and the Rockland County border. The original call of a hiker falling more than 40 feet brought Palisades Interstate Parkway Police, along with firefighters from Piermont and Nyack, shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Responders from several law enforcement agencies searched the Hudson River in vain for a presumed jumper after a car was found abandoned on the George Washington Bridge. Port Authority police found the abandoned vehicle midspan of the bridge's westbound upper level around 9 p.m. Sunday. Brush Fire Burns Through Orangeburg For Hours
More than seven fire departments spent several hours battling a brush fire in Orangeburg after police received a report of "an odor of smoke" in the area, according to the Orangetown Police. The call came in around 4:51 p.m. Wednesday reporting the smell near Tweed Boulevard on Clausland Mountain where responding officers found flames in the area of southwest Nike Lane, said Orangetown Sgt. Firefighters Rescue Dog From Icy Waters Near Nyack Beach
Piermont firefighter Danny Goswick was at work when the fire department received a call to rescue a dog in the icy water on the Hudson River near Nyack Beach. As the department's head scuba instructor, Goswick has rescued a lot of people and animals from the waters, so he suited up and headed to the site Tuesday afternoon. The dog, a small white Shih Tzu, had gotten loose from its dog walker and fell into the water about five to 10 feet from shore when Goswick arrived along with firefighters from the Nyack Fire Department and the Rockland Lake Fire Department.
