Two Trapped, Killed In Fierce Passaic Apartment Fire
Two people were killed in a ferocious garden apartment fire in Passaic on Sunday. A working smoke alarm and the instant response of East Rutherford police prevented any serious injuries during a predawn multi-family home fire, authorities said. A candle in a second-floor bedroom may have ignited the blaze in the mid-century home on Grove Street off Mozart Street between Railroad and Paterson avenues shortly before 5 a.m., responders said. A detector woke sleeping residents, they said. A trio of responding police officers "entered the home to find smoke coming from a bedroom door [that] was also hot to the touch," the East Rutherford Fire Department wrote in a post. The…

Damage was contained to the one oven in a 30-by-30-foot room at MamaMancini's on Branca Road off Route 17 near the Meadowlands after the fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m. -- although the heat melted the strip-door curtains. No injuries were reported. "A swift response by our members helped with keeping the fire contained," the East Rutherford Fire Department said in a social media post. "The fire went to two alarms for manpower relief." MamaMancini's markets and distribute pre-p…

Overnight Fire Severely Damages Lyndhurst Home
The first-floor residents of a Lyndhurst house being renovated made it to safety without injury overnight Tuesday after a fire broke out upstairs. Investigators suspect oil-soaked rags improperly discarded by contractors staining the upper residence’s floors might be responsible for the Summit Avenue blaze, Police Detective Sgt. Vincent Auteri said. All three adult residents downstairs got out OK after the sound of glass breaking from the flames woke one of them just after 1:45 a.m., he said. “The second floor was vacant and under renovation,” Auteri said. “A contractor was on the premises…
