The 56-year-old woman told police that she asked German Gonzales, 39, what he was doing when she found him bending down near the sink, Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox said Thursday.

He replied that he was "picking something up from the floor," the chief said.

A short time later, she used the bathroom and found the phone "taped to a water supply line under the sink," Fox said. "A light was activated on the phone and it was determined to be in a recording mode.""

She notified her supervisor, who immediatley fired Gonzales and called police, he said.

They charged him with one count of invasion of privacy and released him on a court summons pending grand jury action.
