Pennsylvania driver Jason A. Carota, 29, was stopped on the northbound highway at Russell Avenue by Officer Michael Flim just before 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Carota, who has a previous conviction from 2011 out of Pennsylvania, was charged with drug, weapons and paraphernalia possession counts after police found the unloaded .32-caliber handgun and ammo, along with marijuana, Lt. Joseph Soto said.
He also received summonses for faulty lights, driving an unregistered vehicle and having drugs in a vehicle, Soto said.
Carota was first ordered held in the Bergen County Jail, then released, pending further court action, after a detention hearing less than 24 hours later.
