An alert resident reported seeing a man get out of one of two suspicious vehicles, walk up to his driveway and approach one of his cars around 3:40 a.m., Lt. Joseph Soto said.
The resident confronted the would-be thief, who fled in one of the cars, he said.
A short time later, Sgt. Michael Demaio stopped a Buick matching the resident’s descriptions, Soto said.
At the same time, Patrolman Kenneth Marcoux saw an accompanying Corvette fleeing the area at a speed too dangerous for a chase, he said.
Officers arrested four Buick occupants identified by Soto as: Davon H. McSwain, 22; Eyrikah J. Jones, 20; and Terrance R. Richardson, 25, all of Newark, as well as Eshonda F. Jones, 23, of East Orange.
All were charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools and a small amount of marijuana.
Richardson also was charged with providing false information to a law enforcement officer.
Ten or so minutes later, Port Authority police stopped the Corvette at the bus station on the New York City side of the George Washington Bridge and arrested the driver, Asalik M. Bronson, 33, of Newark.
It turned out the Corvette had been reported stolen out of Ringwood, Soto said.
Once extradited, Bronson will face charges in Wyckoff of criminal trespass, in addition to the other counts facing his four alleged cohorts, the lieutenant said.
Richardson was the only one of the four sent to the Bergen County Jail.
The remaining three were released pending court hearings under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law.
