The Spring Meadow Condominiums were evacuated and a host of police, firefighters and ambulance workers rushed to the corner of Spring Meadow Drive and Bromley Place, police said. No immediate injuries were reported.

The Y parking lot was being used as a staging area for emergency personnel.

Child-care programs at the YMCA, ordinarily open until 6 p.m., were closed immediately following the evacuation, forcing many parents to unexpectedly leave work to pick up their children.

Road access to the area was closed, however, so most parents parked on Wyckoff Avenue and walked in.

Fire departments and ambulances from several northwest Bergen County communities remained on standby in the parking lot of the YMCA as a precaution.

PSE&G crews worked to repair their line. Crews from Ridgewood Water and Orange and Rockland Electric were also on the scene if needed.
