The guard sustained a minor injury before James Hayes of Wyckoff fled the store, said Lt. David Murphy, the department's acting police chief.

Detective Sgt. Joseph Soto found Hayes’s car, stopped him and took him into custody a short time later, Murphy said.

Detective Ryan Noon and Officer William Plisich investigated further and found two more shoplifting incidents involving Hayes from the same store, he said.

They charged him with robbery, several counts of shoplifting and failing to have his vehicle inspected.

The 5-foot-6-inch, 175-pound Hayes also had an outstanding shoplifting warrant out of Teaneck, records show.

Hayes – who records show has a Bergen County criminal history stretching back nearly a decade – has remained held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail since the mid-August incident.
