Jamie Proano, 29, of Woodside, had watery and bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol when he was stopped at the corner of Varick and Laight streets around 1:10 a.m., Joseph Pentangelo of the Port Authority Police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
“Fortunately, traffic was held at the time on the New Jersey side for Port Authority maintenance” when Proano drove his 2012 Nissan in from the Manhattan side, he said.
A patrol unit tried to stop Proano when his sedan emerged from the tunnel, but he kept going, Pentangelo said.
Although he stopped at a red light near the tunnel entrance, Proano hit the gas and drove around two approaching NYPD units, he said.
He later refused to submit to a blood test, Pentangelo said.
Proano was charged with DWI, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and fleeing police in a motor vehicle.
