Suspect in Wyckoff thefts once connected to shooting of girl, 5

EXCLUSIVE: One of four men arrested by Wyckoff police in connection with a series of thefts has an extensive criminal history — including his suspected involvement in a 2010 shooting in Brooklyn that wounded three people, including the 5-year-old niece of an NYPD officer.

The defendant, 26-year-old Adam Bilal (above, far left), was a suspect in the April 2010 shooting, which wounded two men and caught the girl in the crossfire. His mugshot was distributed throughout the New York City area, but he later was cleared.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Bilal’s record also includes prior arrests for robbery, assault and reckless endangerment.

On top of that, Bilal was wanted on a five-year-old warrant out of Bergen County for violating probation after he was arrested for shoplifting and then didn’t show up for court.

He was arrested this time, along with three other men, after the owner of Hartger’s Jewelers brought Wyckoff police on a report of a suspicious vehicle, with New York plates, in his parking lot.

Sgt. Michael Ragucci and Ptl. Kevin Kasak spotted the vehicle at the Walgreens on Wyckoff Avenue and spoke to the quartet individually.

Each gave different stories about why they were in Wyckoff, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said.

In their car, police found various stolen goods: iTouches, an iPad, a GPS, and more than  a dozen gift cards that were purchased with stolen credit cards.

Bilal at first gave police a phony name, as did 22-year-old Jaquan Wright, Fox said.

He was released on a combined $75,000 bail three days after the Jan. 3 arrests pending grand jury action. Bilal is charged in Wyckoff with possession of stolen property, theft, use of a fraudulent credit card and providing false information to hinder his arrest.

Released on their own recognizance were Jaquan Wright, 22, and Timothy (21) and Tyshawn (20) Overton on stolen property and theft charges. Wright also was charged with providing false information.

Municipal Court appearances for all four are set for Jan. 23.
