A judge ordered David Browne to surrender to formally face charges within 24 hours of his release from Hackensack University Medical Center.
Browne, 55, was taken there after the Oct. 13 fire on Wyckoff Avenue.
Police found him outside the garage "suffering from numerous injuries," Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Thursday.
An investigation by Wyckoff police and Molinelli's Arson Squad found that he "purposely set the fire with the use of an accelerant inside of the detached garage, causing the destruction of the structure," the prosecutor said.
Browne, who took a medical leave from his job earlier this year, is charged with third-degree arson. A Nov. 18 initial appearance was scheduled in Wyckoff Municipal Court.
